Roof Raising of Outdoor Classroom at Arboretum

Posted by: Marcil on Sep 27, 2008 - 12:32 AM - 653 Reads
The USC Belser Arboretum
A permanent Outdoor Classroom is in the works for the Belser Arboretum and volunteers are needed. The raising (as in raising the roof) of the Classroom will be October 11 and 12, weather permitting, with preliminary work the weekend before. Pat Decoursey’s son-in-law, John Thomas Calvin, an experienced builder and contractor, has volunteered to manage the project and he needs a few good helpers.

The schedule is: Saturday, October 4 (weather permitting) at 9am the crew will survey quickly, set up the batter boards, rake out the gravel pad, dig the six column holes, and pour the concrete anchor. Only two or three helpers are needed to assist John Thomas and he says it will be a simple job of several hours.

Friday Oct. 10 starting about 10am: set up supplies, raise the columns and start the roof.

*Saturday, Oct. 11 starting at 8am will be the major day. John Thomas wants 3 or 4 experienced nailers. He is using pre-built trusses so that the roof should go quickly.

Sunday, Oct. 12, if needed, the crew will finish off any details.

Just email or call Valerie Marcil (738-0682, arboretum@sherwoodforestneighbors.org), the neighborhood liaison for the Arboretum, if you would like to take part in this exciting project! Sign up by Sunday, September 29th for any time period you wish to work.

Those of you who haven't been in the arboretum in the last week or so will be surprised to see the new permanent classroom shelter -- it is wonderful! Pat had a number of volunteers on Saturday (10/11) from the University, and Eric Tate, Sean Taylor, my husband Henry and I helped Pat and her son-in-law on Sunday the 12th (we did roofing mainly). It was a gorgeous day and great to be working outdoors on such a worthy project! A couple of other neighbors came by, too, to see the progress and give moral support. Many thanks to all!
