USC Belser Arboretum Open House, Sunday, December 21

The USC Belser Arboretum
The Arboretum will hold an Open House on December 21, from 1-4pm.

Although winter has come to the W. Gordon Belser Arboretum, the woods are still beautiful with lingering color in the oaks and tulip poplars. The long views are also excellent after leaf fall. The showcase feature will be the progress in development of our wetland, extending from the spring to the east fence. This area has been badly eroded over the years by the overflowing of our stream at the spring. Now with the levees working well in the bald cypress grove, the flow is under control. We have been able to fill the erosion trenches and holes with several hundred cubic yards soil and with log compost from the brush clearing activities in the Arboretum. Come and admire, also, the progress at our Outdoor Classroom; the uniform staining of the raw wood of the columns, the ceiling trusses, and the roof timbers has created a greatly enhanced the charming geometric design of the timbers. The Gift-of-a-Plant in support our Arboretum Endowment will feature Christmas Roses/Lenten Roses (Helleborus). The plants are very vigorous and handsome. Don't miss this opportunity to improve a shady corner of your garden.
