Door-To-Door Magazine Sales Scam

Neighborhood Crime Watch
Be on the lookout for crews of young people, often girls, going door-to-door wanting your money for magazine subscriptions or other offers.

They may claim that their parents lived on certain streets in the neighborhood and that they were trying to go to a baseball tournament or other recreational opportunity. They may say they are collecting money to donate books to children at Richland Memorial Hospital and that the team with the most donations would get an incentive. This is a known scam with inflated subscription prices or no actual subscription ever made. The door to door magazine scam happened to me just last weekend - 2 tall male caucasian teenagers came to my door saying they were the son of so and so, who lived "on heathwood", and were trying to raise money for a baseball tournament. I told them no thanks.

Noting your magazine scam item. There is a similar scam that has surfaced from time to time in our area and others. (We got a call this week.) It is young people claiming that they are selling magazines to raise funds for the USC School of Journalism. I'm the dean of that program. The school - and the university - engage in no such solicitations.
