The next step is the City Council meeting on Wednesday, September 15th.Sherwood Forest neighborhood has been covered under the Community Character Protection Interim Measures for the past two years, and this protection expires August 2010. On June 22nd The neighborhood voted by a margin of 4 to 1 (34-8) in favor of making the Community Character Protection overlay permanent by adopting the newly approved ordinance CC1 Community Character Protection District (click this link to see the entire ordinance). This ordinance is essentially the same as the current Interim Measures, so there would be no change from the current conditions. We would just be making them permanent.
Next Steps Now That the Vote is In:
- The request went to the Planning Commission meeting on July 12th. The green "PC" signs you see around the neighborhood were to announce this meeting. RESULT: The Planning Commission voted in favor of the proposal with one dissenting vote (a member in the real estate business).
- City Council will hear the PC recommendation and entertain discussion of the overlay at a public zoning hearing on Wednesday, September 15th, at 10:00 AM. Text and map amendments to the City ordinance require a public hearing and two readings by City Council. Council may (and they have on occasion) combined the zoning public hearing with a first reading if there's not much discussion/dissension. The second reading is usually a week or two later.
We really need to have neighbors at the City Council zoning public hearing to support the overlay ordinance, so please try to attend if you can on September 15th, even though it is in the middle of the morning.
