Sherwood Forest Neighborhood Association, Executive Committee Meeting
Minutes from 2-15-07 Submitted by Valerie Marcil, Secretary The meeting, a planning meeting for the coming year, was held at Rhett Bailey’s house at 6:30 PM. Present were Russell Jones, presiding, Larry Hembree, Rhett Bailey, Kirby Shealy, Valerie Marcil, Lewis Kirk, Brad Painter, Rachel Peavy (new Social Committee Chair). Roland Smallwood with the City of Columbia was present as a guest. Roland Smallwood encouraged us to apply for the National Neighborhood of the Year award through the National Neighborhood Association. Larry Hembree volunteered to put together an application based on our CANDO garden project. He has since done this. Russell suggested splitting Safety and Beautification into two committees since there is so much to do with each. Brad Painter will continue to do Beautification, and he announced a neighborhood trash pick up (through Adopt a Highway) for Saturday, February 17th. (This has since happened and about 30 people showed up, I think!). Russell is handling the Safety Committee for now and is on a mission to get traffic slowed on Kalmia. He was to meet with DOT traffic engineer, Mark Nolte, the following week. Russell introduced the new Social Committee Chair, Rachel Peavy. We discussed having at least 3 social events in the coming year. Rachael talked about having a neighborhood potluck where “dishes” would be assigned by even and odd-numbered street addresses. We still need membership and enrollment chair. One or two suggestions came up and Kirby was going to ask someone he knew. Valerie was appointed the neighborhood liaison for the Arboretum. Larry and Valerie planned to meet with Pat DeCoursey the following day to discuss wrapping up the CANDO grant tasks and other arboretum work. They were to plan an Open House event and CANDO celebration, and also discuss the ongoing relationship between the neighborhood and the arboretum (see separate report on the Arboretum meeting for details). Everyone was encouraged to continue to recruit block captains. Lewis has done a terrific job of getting captains and has many positions filled, but a number of areas still need captains. The website has a map of “blocks” and the captains. The committee discussed membership dues and decided to reduce the dues to $10 a year to try to get more people to join. We decided that getting more people involved is more important than getting money at this point. We also approved a rolling membership sign-up on a monthly basis. So membership will be good for a year from the month someone pays dues and the treasurer (Rhett) will set up a system to track this so that he can send out reminders each month to those whose dues are due. Lewis and Valerie are working on a monthly electronic newsletter. Anyone can submit articles through the website. We will also work on a paper version to hand out in the neighborhood door-to-door. We discussed the calendar for the coming year. We decided on 4 general meetings, 4 executive committee meetings, and at least 3 social events. Each of the working committees will meet on an as-needed basis. Goals for 2007: • Our next big project will be signs for the neighborhood – both entrance signs and street signs. • Russell is going to continue to work on getting T-shirts printed and maybe also bumper stickers. • We would like to really develop a good neighborhood directory. • We will push for regular newsletters this year, both on the web and printed. • We will also print a guide booklet of zoning restrictions for our neighborhood.
