The July 19th and 20th Garden Days at the USC Arboretum were a great success. We had a work day for the neighborhood-sponsored CANDO gardens outside the Arboretum on Saturday prior to the monthly Sunday Open House for the Arboretum. We had eight hard workers show up for the Saturday work morning and about 20 visitors come through the Open House on Sunday.

The July Open House for the W. Gordon Arboretum will be held on July 20 from 1-4 pm. Five projects that were newly completed during the last month will be showcased.

In preparation for the Sunday July 20th Arboretum Open House (see related article), the Sherwood Forest Neighborhood will host a work day, Saturday, July 19th. The main goal will be to clean up the exterior CANDO gardens, but we may also work inside the arboretum, depending on need. Coffee, juice, water, donuts, and cookies will be provided!!! The May workshop at the Arboretum Open House will continue the theme of environmental awareness. We will have a poster and live demo illustrating how composting as can be used as a way of recycling organic material. Emphasis will be on ways that fungi can increase efficiency of home composting. The exhibit is quite spectacular: oyster mushrooms on a coffee grounds substrate.

Join us for the regular monthly Arboretum Open House from 1-4 pm. Come and enjoy the forest and gardens. Many new features have been completed during the past month and much spring growth of the established plantings is evident.

The University of South Carolina, the Friends of the Arboretum, and SFNA will celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the restoration of the Arboretum and host the launch of the USC W. Gordon Belser Arboretum Endowment Campaign on Monday, March 3 from 6pm to 7pm at the Sherwood Forest ARP Church on the corner of Wilmot and Beltline.

Since I was working in Europe most of January, I will cover both January and February in this newsletter. It has been an eventful two months. The fruit of our labor in Fall 2006 and through the dry summer and fall of 2007 is beginning to show.

The Belser Arboretum will continue its highly successful monthly Open House program again in 2008. These events are held for the Sherwood Forest Community and other interested individuals on the third Sunday of each month from 1-4 pm. Members of the Sherwood Forest Community and of the USC Arboretum staff will greet visitors at the Bloomwood Gate and the Wilmot Gate; they will help direct you to the points of interest and answer any questions you may have.

Many neighbors have expressed interest in working inside the Belser Arboretum and you now have several good opportunities. Pat Decoursey, the manager, has two projects going that she really needs help with.
