Spring was slow coming to Columbia, but finally in late March it danced into town with a magnificent display of dogwoods, cherries, clouds of azaleas, and a host of other flowers plus the welcome greenery of the unfurling leaves. Perhaps the even, plentiful rainfall of 2008 encouraged such a scenario. Many of the shrubs and trees of the Arboretum have matured enough during the past three years to bloom for the first time. Especially rewarding were the native azaleas in the CANDO Gardens and in the Native Azalea Garden above the Outdoor Classroom.

In case you are wondering what the unusual activity going on around the Belser Arboretum is in the next month or so, it is a contractor working for the City of Columbia. Apparently, multiple sewer pipes that run underneath and through the Arboretum are in a state of disrepair and collapse.

The year has been an unusual one, weather wise. January was very dry; February was very cold. The plants in general were greatly delayed in leafing out and blooming, giving quite a wintery appearance to the City. A transformation of the garden scene has occurred in the past week after the deluge of three and a half inches of rain for most of the Columbia area on the February 27-March 1 weekend, followed by 70 degree+ and 80+ daytime temperatures most of the following week. All this promises an exciting Open House on March 15 from 1-4pm.

We will welcome visitors on February 15 from 1-4 pm. The Arboretum is in its winter garb and it even experienced snow and surface ground freezing on February 4. However, items of interest for visitors abound. The start of the early spring bloom is in progress, including fragrant tea olive, Gaillardia, daffodils, money plant, as well as swelling buds on the dogwoods and native azaleas. New growth is also visible on many plants.

The USC Belser Arboretum will hold an Open House November 16, 2008 from 1-4 pm. Fall color is spectacular and the weather fine. Come and enjoy the peace and tranquility. The special feature this month will be a short hike to the newly found cranefly orchids and to the newly planted Atlantic white cedar in the cypress swamp. Both species are rare and highly interesting.

A permanent Outdoor Classroom is in the works for the Belser Arboretum and volunteers are needed. The raising (as in raising the roof) of the Classroom will be October 11 and 12, weather permitting, with preliminary work the weekend before. Pat Decoursey’s son-in-law, John Thomas Calvin, an experienced builder and contractor, has volunteered to manage the project and he needs a few good helpers.
