The CANDO gardens are the gardens on the exterior of the the USC Belser Arboretum that were developed with the help of a CANDO grant from the City of Columbia. The Sherwood Forest Neighborhood Association is responsible for keeping them healthy and pretty. Right now we have a group of five volunteers who work one week a month for an hour or so to help maintain the gardens. We would love any extra helpers who are interested in showing up or who would like to be added to the regular schedule.

Exquisite, custom-designed wrought iron gates will now mark the two entrances to the USC Belser Arboretum. These two gates, one on Wilmot Street, and one on Bloomwood, will lend charm and grace to the neighborhood, and bring further attention to the jewel of an urban forest that lies in the midst of our neighborhood. The Bloomwood gate went up in mid-March. It was sponsored by an anonymous donations through the University of South Carolina. Just after an announcement at the March 27th neighborhood meeting that funds were needed for the second gate, Dr. Pat DeCoursey notified the Sherwood Forest Neighborhood Association of a donation in honor of Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas Calvin of Monita, Virginia that will fund the Wilmot Street gate.

In March 2006 a large-scale restoration of the USC W. Gordon Belser Arboretum was undertaken. Residents of the Sherwood Forest neighborhood began to partner with the University in these ventures and a two-pronged effort has taken place – neighborhood helpers providing sweat equity to assist USC Biology Professor Patricia DeCoursey in cleaning up the inside of the arboretum, and the Neighborhood Association seeking a City of Columbia CANDO grant to help spruce up the exterior of the Arboretum.
