A request by the Neighborhood Association was made to the City of Columbia to install Speed Humps on Kalmia Drive. The traffic, speed and logistics of Kalmia Drive have been a great concern to most of the residents on that street.
After talking with the City of Columbia Traffic Engineering Department, they expressed that Speed Humps have had the most successful results in many residential areas... Pinemont Rd off Beltline and West Buchannan off Beltline are two that come to mind. The normal procedure to have the speed humps installed is to submit a signed petition from the majority of the residents on the road, however, the city said that since we have an active neighborhood association, a letter from the neighborhood association signed by the executive committee would get the process started. The letter was sent at the end of August to the City Traffic Engineer, the Mayor, the city manager and all members of the city council. This week we followed up with the City Traffic Engineer (David Brewer) to get an update on the progress. He said the traffic studies of the road should be complete in the next couple of weeks. The traffic meters were put on Kalmia Drive on Wednesday of last week. Once this is complete, the request will go to city council for a vote. If approved, the City will request approval from the State (Kalmia Drive is a state maintained road) to allow them to be installed. Once that is complete, the speed humps will be installed. We are hopeful that this process is successful in resolving the traffic issues on Kalmia Drive. There are additional areas of the neighborhood that traffic issues are a concern, so if this is successful, we can follow a similar process for these areas as well.
