Gordon Belser, lawyer and naturalist, deeded a tract of his property as an Arboretum to the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina. Mr. Belser had been a Biology major at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. With foresight he realized that the rapidly growing city of Columbia would soon eliminate all areas of undisturbed forest within city limits. The Arboretum and 750 feet of street frontage encompasses approximately 10 acres. Within 10 years the city had surrounded the Belser tract.

The mission of Friends of Congaree Swamp is as follows:
1. Increase recognition, public awareness, and appreciation of Congaree National Park as a resource of local, state, national, and international significance;
2. Protect and restore the ecological systems and natural beauty of the park, and seek to maintain compatible land uses outside the park;
3. Enhance educational, interpretive, and research opportunities relating to the natural heritage and historical heritage of the park and its environs;
4. Support the park through advocacy, volunteer service, and fundraising.

DetailsEstablished in 1989 to serve Richland and Lexington Counties, the mission of Keep the Midlands Beautiful is to engage, inspire and educate the Midlands to invest in our community through litter prevention, recycling, and beautification. Each year, thousands of Midlands residents volunteer to support this mission, including more than 200 groups regularly removing litter on area roads and waterways, schools and businesses coming together to implement recycling programs, and communities pursuing beautification projects.
