City of Columbia Solid Waste Information

City of Columbia Waste Collection Schedule

The schedule for waste collection in our neighborhood is every Thursday for household waste (green rollcart, all items bagged), every second and fourth Thursdays of the month for recycling (blue rollcart, all items loose), and Fridays for yard waste.
The City’s web site has a Waste Wizard with the calendar and the ability to set up email, text message or other means of notification for your household waste and recycling schedule, and any holiday schedule changes. You can also use the Waste Wizard to learn how to recycle or dispose of particular types of items.

Rollcart Household Garbage and Recycling

Carts should be place with the handle facing away from the street, 3 feet away from trees, mailboxes, vehicles and other carts
Carts should be curbside by 7:30am on the day of collection, and be removed by 7:30pm.

Curbside Yard Waste

There are generally three categories of items that will be collected by the CoC Solid Waste Division: yard trimmings, bulky items, and building materials.

Yard Trimmings

Loose or bagged leaves, branches less than 6 ft in length, grass clippings, and other routine yard maintenance waste which is compostable.
Poop bags, plastic plant containers, building materials, and anything that is not compostable should not be intermixed with yard trimmings

Bulky Items

Furniture, applicances, clothing, rigid plastics, etc. Pickup should be scheduled with the City Solid Waste Division at (803) 545-3800.

Building Materials
Bricks, concrete and other building materials must be separated from yard waste and may be subject to a fee. Large amounts of heavy remains from construction, tree removal or lot clearing will be subject to a fee and pickup must be scheduled with the City Solid Waste Division at (803) 545-3800.

Compost
The City of Columbia composting operation processes nearly 25 percent of the City’s total trash tonnage in a low-tech composting operation. When the compost becomes completely broken down, it is a valuable gardening material. The compost is available to citizens and can be picked up at the facility located in Columbia across from the Animal Shelter on Humane Lane off Shop Road. Please call Solid Waste at 803-545-3800 to schedule a pickup.
Review rules and restrictions from the CoC Collections Ordinance.

Electronics Recycling

City of Columbia residents can recycle household electronic equipment (televisions, computers, computer monitors, printers and other electronic equipment) and fluorescent bulbs at the Public Works facility at 2910 Colonial Drive. Items can be dropped off between 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Special Events

The County hosts periodic drop-off events at the State Fairgrounds for electronics, scrap metal, paint, tires, and household hazardous waste (chemicals, cleaners, pesticides). SFNA will try to alert neighbors about this and other opportunities.
